Griddled rye-style bread hugging a beef patty, sweet caramelized onions, and gooey Swiss, the diner booth classic.
Ingredients (serves 4)
- 1.5 lb ground beef
- 8 slices bread
- 8 slices swiss cheese
- 2 onions
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp worcestershire
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp mustard

Slice the onions thin and cook in 2 tbsp butter in a skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until deeply golden, about 15 minutes. Set aside.

Mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard into a quick sauce.

Shape the beef into 4 thin oval patties the size of your bread, season with salt, pepper, and the Worcestershire, and cook in the same skillet over medium-high heat until browned and cooked to 160°F, about 3 minutes per side.

Build each sandwich with sauce, a slice of Swiss, a patty, caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss, and the top bread.

Butter the outsides and griddle the sandwiches over medium heat, pressing gently, until golden and the cheese is fully melted, about 3 minutes per side.
